On August 19, 1944, French Resistance forces and Allied troops began their liberation of Paris, driving out the last significant Nazi opposition who had been occupying the city since June 22, 1940. Photographers Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and George Rodger – who would come to be three of the four founders of Magnum Photos alongside David ‘Chim’ Seymour – were all there, and documented the historic scenes. . 75 years on, we look back at Capa and Cartier-Bresson's documentation of the event. . "There often weren’t even taxis that would take me to these villages. I had to befriend postmen and bakers, who would drive me from the nearest big towns to these smaller places. My greatest informants were truck drivers, the homeless, and of course summer fair organizers themselves." - Cristina Garcia Rodero . Christmas for them is January 14th, Vissarion’s birthday. In 1988 the man born as Sergei Torop lost his job as a traffic policeman in the Siberian town of Minusinsk. Shortly afterwards, just as the Soviet Union unraveled around him, he had his first revelations that he was Jesus Christ. He founded the Church of the Last Testament in the early 1990s. People flocked to him from all corners of the Russian empire and founded an off-the-grid utopian eco-village in the Siberian wilderness, the Abode of Dawn. The community now numbers around five thousand dedicated followers. They have built their own schools, churches, formed a priesthood and their own social structure. Vissarion’s right-hand disciple, Vadim, is always close by and records all Vissarion’s deeds and proclamations. The resulting chronicles are continuously published in thick Russian-language tomes titled Pozledniy Zavet, or The Last Testament. They are currently on volume sixteen. Krasnoyarsk Territory. 'Magnum Montagnes', a new group show in Switzerland, explores mountains as photographed by Magnum photographers . The archives of Magnum Photos contain images of some of the world’s highest peaks. These photographs are not only a testament to a very human fascination with mountains all over the world, but also to the veneration and fear that they can inspire. Up until the 20th century, mountains seemed to be indestructible, but today, we see mountain habitats overused and endangered. . The exhibition is on show at Musée des Beaux-Arts Le Locle until October 13, 2019. For more info, please visit magnumphotos.com/events. . "In 1978 I created an exhibition about Brazil called Negativo Sujo. Its focus was on this still-raw society. Ever since then, and through the use of collages and the juxtaposition of images in creating visual poems, my work has always dealt with this duality between life and death, between pain and sexuality. These are the entities that drive the world we live in." - @miguelriobranco Rio Branco's body of work in metropolises, 'Maldicidade', explores humanity’s baser instincts, the disparity between rich and poor, and the thin line between ugliness and beauty. .
