NGC 188 is an open cluster in the constellation Cepheus. Unlike most open clusters that drift apart after a few million years because of the gravitational interaction of our Milky Way galaxy, NGC 188 lies far above the plane of the galaxy and is one of the most ancient of open clusters known, at approximately 6.8 billion years old. NGC 188 is very close to the North Celestial Pole, under five degrees away, and in the constellation of Cepheus at an estimated 5,000 light-years' distance, this puts it slightly above the Milky Way's disc and further from the center of the galaxy than the Sun. Callisto is one of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. With a diameter of 4800 km, it is the second largest moon of the planet and the third of the solar system. The surface of Callisto is the most craterized of the whole solar system. The craters are in fact the only geological structures present on the satellite: for example, large mountains are absent. . . 🇮🇹: Callisto è una delle quattro lune galileiane di Giove. It is a common opinion that many asteroids are a mine of precious, useful and rare metals, so much so that space extraction could become a business in the future like today's oil extraction. To pave the way towards this new and dangerous frontier, bio-extraction (biomining ) is used, which uses bacteria and fungi to extract metal from raw ore - a method by which 15% of all copper is extracted in the world today, for example. Bio-extraction has been used since the 1950s for mining activities in sites considered exhausted for traditional activities and for the decontamination of industrial land, in the presence of toxic substances. As miners, these microorganisms work well with many metals, from gold to uranium, generally solubilizing them and thus separating them from the raw material. But no one knows how they would behave in the absence of gravity. To find out, a team of astrobiologists from the Universities of Edinburgh (Scotland ) and Stanford (USA ) studied a series of experiments to be conducted in Space. Thus, particular bacteria and fungi, separated into 18 containers, have landed on the International Space Station, where, in microgravity, they will be fed based on various basaltic rocks similar to those typical of Mars and the Moon. The study first of all aims to understand if it is possible to use bioextraction in Space, but, says the astrobiologist Rosa Santomartino (University of Edinburgh ), it will also be able to give more general information both on how bacteria can be used in Space, and on their evolution on Earth. - - - #spazio #space #astronomia #astronomy #astrophoto #astrophotography #passioneastronomia #urano #uranus #milkyway #vialattea #sun #sole #marte #mars #luna #moon #nasa #notte #night #voyager1 #voyager2 #buconero #blackhole #auroraboreale #northernlights #nebulosa #nebula #nomanssky

#astrophotography #milkyway #longexposure #photography #astronomy #nightphotography #nightsky #stars #night #ig #space #moon #astro #astrophoto #nature #milkywaychasers #universe #longexpo #landscape #canon #galaxy #sky #shots #universetoday #nikon #nightscape #science #telescope #stargazing #ISS

Photo by @johnhphotography : "It was around 6/7(? ) Years ago when my mate Jamie and I stumbled across them and ever since we've been totally captivated, capturing them during different seasons and also during the night. Back in those days, however, my equipment just wasn't up to performing well enough for any astro work. It was only until I got my hands on the Sony A7r3 and Laowa 15mm f/2 that i was really happy with the results. I would love to head back in winter and do another trail for 4 hours and see how long the trail is!" 🌟 This week is Feature Week! Yosemite National Park 🇺🇸 in welcomes you to experience this majestic park in all four seasons. It offers programs tailored for stargazers. Moreover, it is home to soaring granite icons such as Half Dome, El Capitan and Yosemite Falls, and some of the world's biggest and oldest trees, the giant sequoias, as well as a wide range of natural monuments, vineyards, and historic Gold Rush landmarks. — 📍 #DiscoverUSA — 📸 Photo taken by @dereksturmanphotography

Kepler-438 b (formerly known as KOI-3284.01 ) is a terrestrial-type exoplanet that orbits in the habitable zone of the Kepler-438 star. It is about 472 light years from Earth, in the constellation of the Lira. The planet was discovered as part of the Kepler Mission, and its existence was confirmed on 6 January 2015. It was considered the confirmed extrasolar planet most similar to Earth (ESI = 0.88 ) until the discovery, in 2017, of TRAPPIST-1 d. Kepler-438 b has a radius 1.12 times that of the Earth, and revolves around its parent star, a red dwarf smaller and cooler than the Sun (0.54 M☉ ), in 35.2 days, at an average distance of 0.16 AU. The planet is inside the habitable zone of its star, and could therefore have liquid water on the surface. Until the discovery in 2017 of TRAPPIST-1 d, it was classified as the exoplanet with the highest Earth Similarity Index (0.88 ), a value that makes it one of the most similar to the Earth in terms of size and surface temperature. However, it is known that the activity of class M stars can make the appearance of life due to stellar activity problematic, and with regard to Kepler-438 b it has in fact been found that the planet is subjected to super-flares of its star every 100 days, with stellar storms far more violent than solar flares, to the point that they would be able to sterilize life on a planet inhabited like the Earth. Researchers at the University of Warwick therefore suggest that Kepler-438 b is not habitable, due to the large amount of radiation it receives. In fact, several factors concur in the definition of habitability of a planet and the possibility that it has liquid water on the surface; in addition to being placed at the right distance from the parent star, there are the various geophysical and geodynamic aspects, the radiation, and the environment surrounding the star, which can influence the evolution of the planets and life, if it originated . The planet, more likely. it might look like a bigger and fresher version of Venus. - - - #spazio #space #astronomia #astronomy #astrophoto #astrophotography #passioneastronomia #urano #uranus #milkyway #vialattea #sun #sole #marte #mars #luna #moon
